What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is certainly not new. The art of Reflexology can be traced back to 2330 B.C. in ancient Egypt and also in India and China. Ancient pictures in the tomb depicts that some form of toe and foot pressure was provided. The method I have been trained in and use is the "Original "Ingham method". Reflexology as we know it today is attributed to the work of Eunice Ingham, an American Therapist. Reflexology is a science that deals with the principal that there are reflex areas in the feet and hands which correspond to all of the glands, organs and parts of the body. Reflexology is a unique method of using the thumb and fingers on these reflex areas. For example, the toes represent the head and the ball of the foot represents the chest and lung region. I work on the feet as the feet are more sensitive and better results to hand reflexology and have over 7000 nerve endings. Reflexology is a unique method of using fingers and thumbs working on each area of the feet. Reflexology can bring about a deep sense of relaxation, help nature normalise, reduce stress and tension and increase circulation. Reflexology is not ticklish and a firm (not hard) pressure is effective. If a particular part of the body is out of balance, the corresponding reflex may feel tender or sore during the treatment. It is important to advise of any discomfort so that steps may be taken to rectify this discomfort. Generally people describe any areas of tenderness as a ‘good pain’ which is both bearable and beneficial. |
About Eunice Ingham
Eunice (1889-1974) who lived in America mapped out reflex points on the feet and hands that correspond to all of the organs, glands and parts of the body.
Eunice Ingham is still known as the pioneer of modern reflexology and worked with reflexology for 40 years from the late 1930's. She authored two well-known books “Stories the Feet Can Tell” and “Stories the Feet Have Told”. They have since been combined into one volume. In addition to her writing and lecturing, she, along with her nephew, Dwight Byers, founded the International Institute so that her work could be continued in perpetuity. If you asked me who my hero is .... I would have to say Eunice who never gave up the fight with the bureaucrats during her time with Reflexology and for her research and perseverance to bring this wonderful modality to the world. |
